The Virgin Mary is one of the female figures of greatest projection and importance in humankind. More than just Christ’s mother, the Virgin Mary represents redemption, she is the “mother of the needy,” an image that comforts and has always played this role. Her maternal and sacred calling is emblematic in the role of women in Latin American society.
And it is in Latin America that Mary has an essential role in building the people’s identity. Understanding Mariana’s devotion is also understanding what it means to be Latin American. Mary was the main character used by the church to evangelize the natives who lived here. From this culture shock came an original and creative figure of Mary, which is far from the traditional Catholic image.
For that reason, devotion to the Virgin Saint became a common denominator among the different cultures which inhabit this continent, making her the official patroness of all 21 Latin American nations.

During the Second World War, at the Battle of Monte Castello, Italy, a squadron of FEB (Brazilian Expeditionary Force) mine hunters suffers a panic attack and ends up lost in “no man’s land.” Along the way, they find two deserters: an Italian soldier who regretted having turned partiggiano and a German officer tired of the war. With the surprising solidarity of former enemies, the soldiers became real heroes, diffusing the most feared mine filed in all of Italy.
Shot in Italy in the first quarter of 2011, “The Mountain,” will be the first fictional feature film about the Brazilian soldiers who fought in Italy. A movie on a unique subject for the country, which brings back a story that, despite being recent, has been forgotten.
